Remuneration: N36,000,000 – N54,000,000 pa + additional operational benefits (based on skills and experience)
Location: Lagos Island, Lagos.
Reports to: Head of Department, Paediatrics and Child Health
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a highly qualified and dedicated Consultant Paediatrician to join our Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. The successful candidate will provide specialist clinical care to paediatric inpatients and outpatients, lead ward rounds, supervise junior medical staff, contribute to the hospital’s immunisation and community child health programmes, and participate in departmental research and teaching activities. The role demands fellowship-level clinical expertise, strong family communication skills, and a commitment to evidence-based paediatric practice in a resource-appropriate Nigerian setting.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead daily ward rounds on the paediatric inpatient ward, neonatal unit, and high-dependency unit
Conduct specialist outpatient paediatric clinics including general paediatrics, sickle cell disease clinic, and well-child developmental surveillance
Manage acute paediatric emergencies including severe malaria, meningitis, respiratory failure, sickle cell crises, and sepsis
Supervise and provide clinical training to resident doctors, medical officers, and nursing staff
Perform and supervise paediatric procedures including lumbar punctures, IV access in neonates, neonatal resuscitation, and pleural aspiration
Coordinate multidisciplinary management with surgery, cardiology, neurology, dietetics, physiotherapy, and social work departments
Implement and oversee the National Immunisation Programme schedule within the hospital’s outpatient setting
Prepare clinical reports, discharge summaries, and medico-legal documentation to required standards
Contribute to departmental research activities and present at clinical governance and academic meetings
Participate in 24-hour on-call rota for paediatric and neonatal emergencies as scheduled
REQUIREMENTS
MBBS or MBChB from a recognised university, registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)
Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in Paediatrics or Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCP) in Paediatrics
Valid Annual Practising Licence from MDCN
Completed NYSC or valid exemption certificate
Minimum of two years post-fellowship clinical experience
Current certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP) or Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Strong clinical knowledge of common Nigerian paediatric disease presentations including malaria, sickle cell disease, tuberculosis, and malnutrition
DESIRED SKILLS
Sub-specialty training or interest in neonatology, paediatric neurology, or paediatric haematology
Experience with DHIS2 or other health information management systems
Research publications in peer-reviewed journals
Familiarity with donor-funded health programme reporting
Membership of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN)
Demonstrated teaching experience with medical students or resident doctors
